Sichuan Bloody Rules
Three suits. One to leave behind. And a table that keeps playing after the first Hu.
1 · Choose your voided suit
SBR uses 108 tiles: four copies of ranks 1–9 in circles, bamboos, and characters. There are no winds, dragons, or flowers. Before play, each player declares one suit to eliminate.
You may choose a suit missing from your starting hand. If you have selected an opening tile of the suit you declare, it becomes your opening discard. A missing suit leaves the opening discard for you to choose.
2 · Clear it before Hu
While you hold tiles of your voided suit, discard those first. Your winning hand must contain none of that suit and use at most two suits.
3 · Claim, or build in your hand
Pong and Kong claims are allowed. Chow claims are not, although sequences you build in your concealed hand are valid. Hu takes priority over Pong or Kong. Multiple players can win on the same discard.
4 · Keep the table going
A winner leaves active play and no longer pays for later wins or kongs. The remaining players continue until three players have won or the wall runs out.
Passing a winning discard
If you pass Hu, its value is remembered. Until your next draw, a later discard must produce a higher-value win before you can claim Hu again.
Fan becomes points
A standard hand starts at zero fan. Add the compatible patterns and bonuses listed below, up to a cap of four fan. Your hand value is 2 raised to that fan total.
| Fan | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Points | 1 | 2 | 4 | 8 | 16 |
A discard win is paid by the discarder. On a self-draw, each opponent still in play pays the hand value plus one. For example, two fan is worth four points on a discard, or five from each active opponent on a self-draw.
Kong payments & the end of the wall
Kong payments
A concealed kong earns two points from each active opponent. Adding a fourth tile to an exposed pong earns one from each. Claiming a discard for a kong earns two from its discarder. Each kong also adds one fan to a winning hand.
Kong payments are reversed when another player wins by robbing that kong or by claiming the discard immediately after it.
When the wall runs out
Among players who have not won, those without a ready hand pay each ready player that player’s highest theoretical hand value. Players who are not ready refund their unreversed kong earnings.
In Mahjong Space, a player who still holds their voided suit and has discarded outside it receives a 48-point Flower Pig penalty. This is an end-of-wall penalty, not a flower tile rule.
This guide describes SBR as implemented in Mahjong Space. Sichuan house rules can differ.
