Mahjong Competition Rules
The full tile set, classic calls, and a rich catalogue of scoring combinations.
The tiles & the goal
Play with circles, bamboos, characters, winds, dragons, and flowers: 144 tiles in all. Most winning hands form four sets and a pair; special hands such as Seven Pairs and Thirteen Orphans take a different shape.
Draw, discard, claim
Draw a tile, then discard one. Claim a discard with Pong for three matching tiles, or Kong for four. Chow claims a sequence from the player immediately before you. Declare Hu when your draw or an eligible discard completes your hand.
Winds & flowers
Your seat wind and the prevailing round wind can each score through a matching pong or kong. Flowers are revealed and replaced, and add one point each.
Scoring in Mahjong Space
The app uses Mahjong Competition Rules scoring, also called Chinese Official Scoring. Compatible features combine; overlapping or excluded combinations do not count twice.
Mahjong Space currently allows a complete hand without enforcing the official eight-point minimum. Flower points are bonus points, separate from that official minimum.
On a discard win, the discarder pays your hand value plus eight points, and the other two players pay eight each. On a self-draw, all three opponents pay your hand value plus eight.
One Hu ends the round
Scores are tallied when a player goes out. Seat winds rotate across rounds; the prevailing wind marks the larger round cycle.
